Champaign, Illinois Residence

Located alongside a ravine amongst 20 acres of virgin forest, this home takes its cues from the farm structures that populate central Illinois. This home incorporates passive solar design throughout to combat against the extreme cold as well as the often hot and humid days of summer. The majority of glass faces east looking over the ravine. The large roof overhang along the east elevations blocks the sun during the summer months, while allowing the sun to enter and naturally warm the home in the winter. Operable clerestory windows, open stair shaft and cross ventilation was also incorporated into the design to reduce the homes energy needs.
